Herbal medicines are in use as traditional mode of treatment for various ailments in India, as they produce less side effects and are more economical. Among the herbal medicines, Aloe vera is gaining increased momentum as it is easily available and has numerous health benefits. The utilization of Aloe vera dates back to 4th century. The name Aloe vera is derived from the Arabic word "Alloeh" meaning shining bitter substance, while "Vera" in Latin means true. Aloe vera is known by various terminologies like "lilly of the desert", "plant of immortality", "heaven's blessing". The current review article is an attempt to discuss the history, parts, ingredients, general uses, dental uses, periodontal uses, contraindications, and side effects of Aloe vera.
